The inefficiency of Trini bureacracy is alive and rampant in the hallowed halls of the highest institution of learning, the University of the West Indies.
You go to the personnel dept for a job letter and they tell you they want your request in writing.... ok, fine BUT instead of giving you a pre-printed form to fill out and sign (even in this age of technology, such simple and useful things should not be overlooked), they tell you you have to email them a request. So in essence, you have to delay your request just so they can receive it by email. What is that? Are they actually going to save the email? It's so ridiculous it's not even funny.
And it doesn't end there, students around campus (not all faculties) are going around copying timetables from a notice board because there are no hard copies available to them. Well, why don't the timetable schedulers email it to the students?
And a class of students sat around for an hour waiting for a lecturer who never showed up for their first class....what's the point in collecting contact information for students if you don't use it? Why weren't the students informed that a lecturer had not yet been assigned for their class? Don't the students deserve that much respect and consideration? And even if you failed to contact all the students, how difficult is it to put a notice up on the classroom door and on the board so that when the students come, they will be enlightened?
Should we blame it on the principal? After all, he gets the glory when UWI shines, so he should take the blame when it is found wanting. Unfortunately, he has little or no control over the actions of his staff, though he may think he has. The administration of UWI is not completely wrought with bumbleheads and incompetents, there are quite a few decent people who not only accomplish their jobs efficiently but do so above and beyond the call. Sadly, this is the exception and not the rule. Though there are now signs up in the Administration building encouraging staff to think of students are the most important people on campus, the staff all around continue to ignore that message and treat students with scant respect, and carry out their jobs thoughtlessly, because they know the students have no recourse but to accept all that is doled out to them. What a crying shame.
